Steel Pan Music for Black History Month
Primary classes have been learning about the Windrush generation who were invited to the UK to help rebuild the country after the Second World War for Black History Month. They have learnt about the HMT Empire Windrush, the boat that brought hundreds of passengers from the Caribbean to the UK in 1948, and the jobs they came to do. They have also been learning about music, culture and food from the Caribbean.
As part of their studies, the Primary Department welcomed Kavel who is a musician and plays the steel pan drum under the name Sweet Tin Sounds into class to play. Pupils loved the music and joined in with singing and signing. Some pupils also had a chance to play the steel pan.
They also had an opportunity to try some food and drink that originated from the Caribbean including ginger beer, rum cake, plantain crisps and coconut milk. All the pupils were very adventurous and tried everything, with the plantain crisps being a firm favourite.
At break time Kavel entertained the whole school out in the playground with his wonderful sounds and staff and pupils took the time to enjoy the music in the sunshine. Everyone returned to lessons with big smiles on their faces, a testament to the beautiful sounds they had all enjoyed.
