One of the first St Philip’s pupils returns to school
The school were delighted to welcome back one of the original pupils who enrolled in the school when it first opened its doors in May1954.
Terence Devenish, known to all as Terry, was the 11th pupil enrolled as shown in the original school record book. Terry and his family were delighted to find his name in the book when they returned as guests of honour for the grand opening of the new Willow Block in December
He toured the new facilities where they saw pizzas being made in the Food Tech room, a science lesson underway and had a chance to meet some of the reptiles in the Animal Care room. They also visited the Design Technology class and saw pupils working on woodwork projects and learning how to lay a brick wall.
Peter, Terry’s brother speaking on his behalf said: “This is a fantastic school. Terry was one of the first students here and they equipped him so when he left this school. You students, you’re lucky this a beautiful, lovely place to learn.”
When Terry left sent St Philip’s he went to work in a specialist music shop in Kingston, helping with deliveries and stock management. When that closed down he moved to Tesco’s and worked there until he retired. He continues to live independently and enjoys spending time with his family.
