Number Day Fun and cakes

We celebrated Number Day and all things mathematical on Friday 31st January. It was a non-uniform day, and many staff and pupils chose to come dressed in number appropriate attire ranging from their favourite football or sports shirts to leavers hoodies.

NSPCC Number Day

Throughout the day, lessons followed a number-based theme; for example, in Food Technology classes made pizza’s and cut them into half and quarters creating a visual and very edible version of a pie chart. The Food theme continued into both KS3 and KS4 Maths classes where pupils took part in taste tests to see if they could tell the difference between well-known brands such as Dairy Milk and Pringles and score the different products.

The Primary class took part in a Viking Trading game whereby each group started with a resource such as pottery, beads or metal and they had the chance to use their resources to trade and buy fish to eat or wood to build houses. It was a great opportunity to understand a practical use of maths and the value of being able to trade commodities to buy goods that they needed.

The highlight of the day, however, was undoubtedly the Number-based Bake Off. Staff and students submitted their bakes, and everyone had the chance to view the cakes and biscuits at breaktime and vote for their favourite bakes. Even better at lunchtime, all the bakes were sold off and we raised a fantastic £195 for NSPCC.

After lunch Key Stage 3 pupils took part in a number hunt around the whole school and Key Stage 4 pupils took part in a Gambling Awareness workshop and activities. We also launched our very own St Philip’s currency with Mr Walsh, Ms Clements and Mr Hill’s faces on the notes.

Overall, it was a great opportunity to understand the importance of Maths in everyday life and to highlight some of the practical uses of numeracy in fun ways.
