Italian Week at the Beech Cafe

Post-16 students chose to cook Italian Food for Creativity Week. They investigated food around the world and decided they would like to cook traditional Italian food for their Wednesday Beech Café service.

On the menu was lasagne with a side salad and an optional dessert of a lemon cup cake. It smelt delicious and staff who hadn’t pre-ordered were coming to ask if there were any servings left.

As always, the students planned their menu, budgeted and went shopping for the ingredients paying attention to both cost and use by dates. They promoted their menu to staff and took orders in advance. On Wednesday morning they prepared and cooked the food ready for lunch time service.

The students even offer a delivery service for busy staff members who agree it is exceptional value for money.

The Beech Café offers the students a chance to put into practice life skills such as budgeting and preparing meals. It also offers them valuable work experience as they have the opportunity to work as a team to cook the food to the highest standards and also to practice their customer service skills such as taking cash and delivering meals.
