Happy 70th anniversary St Philip’s

On Friday 10th May 2024, St Philip’s celebrated their 70th anniversary. The school records show that St Philip’s School opened to students on 10th May 1954, and we know that 11 students started school on that day.  Fast forward 70 years and we now have 182 students on roll.

We started the celebration with a 1950s style roll call with all classes meeting on the playing field, and Mr Walsh, dressed in a robe as a ‘Headmaster’ welcomed the students and told them a little about the history of St Philip’s.  There was a very jovial atmosphere as one year 8 student put his hand up and asked Mr Walsh if he is also bringing back the cane!

Students enjoyed games such as hopscotch and marbles during break time then at the end of the day, watched a special video while enjoying some cake. The video included lots of facts about the school and some happy birthday messages from former and current staff.

The staff team then stayed on for a special quiz hosted by ex St Philip’s Deputy Head, Mr Shaw. It was a really fantastic day, enjoyed by staff and students alike.  A special thanks to Mrs Patel for making the lovely cake (pictured) and Mrs Gawthrop for taking on the organising of the event.

We hope to host a bigger event next academic year when we open our new vocational centre and parents will be invited!
