Creative arts work experience taster day

Year 10 pupils had the opportunity to meet with people who are currently working in a wide range of careers across the creative arts industries. The taster day involved groups visiting a concert hall, theatre, arts gallery, nightclub venue and the Music and Arts Departments at Kingston University.

One group started the day at the fabulous Yehudi Menuhin Concert Hall and heard about the many job roles from box office to concert musician. They enjoyed a backstage tour, but the absolute highlight was hearing one of the concert pianos being expertly played and enjoying the acoustic experience of sitting in the auditorium.

This group then headed to Kingston University Music Department to learn about studying music at university and where it can lead.

Another group started at the Rose Theatre and they too learnt about the varied careers and had the chance to see the sound and light gallery. They headed to the Circuit nightclub and music venue to see for themselves some of the jobs on offer there.

The final group spent the day at the Stanley Picker Gallery where they enjoyed viewing the current exhibition before having the chance to unleash their creativity. They created their own characters and made them out of clay

The gallery is connected to Kingston University’s Arts Department and they were able to look into the workshops and see the range of mediums that artists use. Some of the staff and students were kind enough to come out and talk to the group and show some of the pieces they were working on from metalwork to 3D printing and much more!

We are very grateful to our hosts, we get great feedback from these visits and know they help to inspire some of our students to look to the arts for possible careers in the future.
