Congratulations to Inspire (it stands for INclusive SPort In Recreation & Exercise) as it celebrates its 10th anniversary. The organisation provides support to anybody aged 15+ with special educational needs. St Philip’s is delighted to host the weekly Inspire sessions on Mondays during term time giving their members an opportunity to play sports such as basketball, cricket, short tennis, volleyball and more. Many members are ex-pupils of St Philip’s and love coming back to school for these sessions.

Inspire is much more than a sports club. They regularly organise outings for members including 10-pin bowling at the Tolworth Bowl, Xmas Panto visits to Esher Theatre, summer seaside outings, horse riding, Bluebell line steam train and picnic days out.

Over the last 10 years Inspire members have been to the Special Olympics in Abu Dhabi representing GB, appeared on stage singing ‘Anything you can do I can do better’ and they have completed over 150 Park Runs to name but a few. They also make videos and podcasts, bake work in hotels on reception, serve up Gregs to hungry customers, help at disco nights at Pryzm nightclub in Kingston and one of our past members and even designed the Inspire logo.

Head Coach, Maggie North, took over the running of Inspire Sport from Kingston Council in 2014 with five members, £25 and hardly any equipment. She is supported by a team of wonderful volunteers including Bob (or Mr Shaw to St Philip’s pupils) who has been helping for the last eight years. There are now over 30 members, and they need extra storage for all the sports kits they have.

Inspire is self-funded and raises over £3000 each year to keep the activities running. Several of our members now have paying jobs in catering and hospitality. Others do amazing things in the community which has been made possible by the positive start they got in education, and the support and socialising through clubs like Inspire, which has given them the skills to thrive and enjoy life.

Congratulations for a fantastic ten years and here’s wishing everyone involved the best for the next ten years.
