Arts Work Experience Day

Our Year 10 pupils took part in an Arts Work Experience day on Thursday 21st November. They visited local arts venues and talked to staff about careers in the arts industries.  Pupils had a choice of three groups to join and each group visited different local arts venues.

The first group spent the morning at the Stanley Picker Gallery where they enjoyed looking at the current exhibition. The gallery is connected to Kingston University and they were able to tour the arts department and find out about the range of mediums that artists work in from metalwork to printing and much more!   After the trip we were delighted to receive this email from a parent, “My daughter came back thrilled today. She now wants to be an artist.  The trip has had a huge impact.”

In the afternoon the pupils were visited by Estelle Day, an artist and parent of a child in the school.  Estelle shared her artwork and the pupils had lots of questions for her.

The second group visited the Yehudi Menuhin Concert Hall, an organisation we hope to engage with more in the future. They then visited the Curzon Cinema in Kingston in the afternoon.

The third group visited the Rose Theatre where they took part in a workshop looking at different jobs in the theatre.  We were delighted to hear that following our trip last year three of our pupils are now part of the Rose Youth Company.

It was great to have some positive feedback about our pupils too:

“It was an absolute pleasure to show your students around yesterday – they behaved wonderfully and were very engaged.”  Lyn Turner at the Yehudi Menhuin Hall.

“Many thanks for visiting the Rose Theatre today. We had such a great time working with your students, what a talented bunch!”  Sarah Chipperfield at the Rose Theatre

We look forward to running this day again next year for our Year 10’s and hope it inspires some of our students to look to the arts for possible careers in the future.
